Yesterday, I woke up with a massive ear infection. You know the ones....ear hurts so much you can't even touch it, so swollen that you can't open your jaw.

So, I called to get an appointment, for the ear infection and a very stubborn sliver that I haven't been able to get out of my finger for two weeks.

The doctor was a resident and he was more interested in the sliver in my finger than the ear infection. He had to get permission to use lidocaine to numb my finger to go digging for it. I pointed out, while he waited he might want to check my ear.

He grabbed the otoscope and then grabbed my earlobe, which had me hissing in pain and almost swinging at him. You have to understand. I have a very high tolerance for pain, as I deal with the spasms and muscle tighteness that come with my MS. For me to be swinging at a doctor, means....It was definately hurting me.

So, he gently looked into my ear and I hear in a whisper, "Wicked", followed by "wickedly infected". He was so impressed with what was going on in my ear, that he got a couple other residents and his superviser to take a look. I was asked no more than 4 times, if I was diabetic. Finally, I gave them a look and pointed to my chart.

"I don't know, you tell me."

More questions, as they couldn't understand how I could get so infected without feeling it before today. They were sure that I was diabetic. I finally looked at them.

"No, I'm not diabetic. I have MS."

Oh, well apparently that explained alot to them. DUH!!! Multiple Sclerosis is an AUTOIMMUNE disorder. I catch colds faster, they hit me harder, I can't fight them off like normal people. Hell the last time I got an ear infection, I also had a bladder infection and food poisoning. I spent the day in the hospital because it hit me all in one day, as infections tend to do.

Then of course comes all the questions from the resident.

What are you taking for your MS?

Ummmmm....Nothing.

Why aren't you taking anything for it?

I have Relasping-Remitting MS, which means the last time I had an attack was 2 years ago. Since my first attack in 2003, I have had 2 attacks. Its not bad enough to treat with a daily steroid shot yet.

Are you on this Anti-inflammatory diet?

No, because MS isn't an inflammatory disease, its a Autoimmune disease. That diet works for those with fibromyalgia, bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis.

From the actual doctor:

Are you taking a Vitamin D supplement?

I am getting 100% of Daily allowance of Vitamin D with my Daily Multi Vitamin.

Well you should be getting 4000IU a day. A Multivitamin will only give you 400.

Geee....wonder what happens when you get a Vitamin D overdose?

Overdose of Vitamin D can lead to abnormal calcium metabolism with symptoms such as nausea, constipation, weakness and bone pain.

Oh joy! *sighs*

hmm, sounds like an awful day hun. Umm if you need to get the oil that is put into your ears for swimmers ear or ear infections. It will help with the pain and the infection. I hate it with a purple passion when doctors don't listen to what you are telling them. You know how you feel if they would just listen.
